Do Our Best is a unique show starring writer Remy Beasley who returns to the Girl Guides to get her ‘Entertainer’s Badge’. It’s a funny, expressive and moving account of a girl coping with grief and searching for comfort.

What’s touching about Remy’s piece is that is it so theatrical yet slowly unravels a delicate journey of grief through the eyes of a young girl. Beasley places Sephie, who is over-eager and desperate to impress. As we enter the space and take our seats, she keenly greets everyone and announces that she is finally able to get her ‘Entertainer’s Badge.’ Anxiously awaiting the arrival of Brown Owl to watch the show and reward her for the badge, Sephie delves into her story with the Girl Guides.

It isn’t until Sephie learns that Brown Owl has been involved in a freak tractor accident and has mangled her arm, does she throw a self-entered tantrum. Beasley is tremendous at creating a character you need to warm to. She is demanding and self-centered but you gradually start to understand her and really feel for her.

It’s an engaging performance that maintains pace as we laugh our way through Sephie’s experience. We are taken through Sephie’s three other attempts to get the badge and they are humorous tales.

It’s a beautifully bonkers coming-of-age story and a heart-warming and entertaining performance from Remy Beasley.

★★★★

Do Our Best is on at Edinburgh Fringe at Underbelly Cowgate at 14:50.
