It’s not Christmas without a good singalong, and the Symphony Hall bring all the Christmas classics to their stage in a traditional festive concert.

Performed by the London Concert Orchestra with the City of Birmingham Choir, Christmas Classics is a celebration of Christmas bound to make you feel warm and fuzzy this festive season. The stunning sounds of the orchestra echo in the Symphony Hall to create a sound like no other. It’s the ultimate place to hear music in Birmingham, especially at Christmas time.

With traditional musical numbers, conductor Adrian Lucas creates an intimate atmosphere in the large concert hall. Chatting the audience, telling some brilliantly bad Christmas cracker jokes and leading the orchestra with some iconic Christmas songs of old and new. Opening with Joy To The World, Sans Day Carol and Ding dong merrily on high, we were taken on a history of these beautiful songs through Adrian Lucas’ facts and context.

The highlight for me was the spectacular rendition of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. With a mixture of the most famous songs, it’s like the ballet is brought to life as you reminisce on the incredible songs. As someone who watches Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker year on year, it was so interesting to see the orchestra bring the score to life and to see the different instruments used in different sections of each song.

Alongside listening to the beautiful carols, there were even opportunities to singalong with the choir. Singing to The First Nowell, O Come all ye faithful, Once in royal David’s City and more, it was a truly magical way to kick off the lead up to Christmas.

The Christmas Classics at Birmingham Symphony Hall is not one to miss year on year as you can bask in the sensational music from the London Concert Orchestra and City of Birmingham Choir. They bring Christmas to life through enchanting festive favourites in a properly traditional evening of music.

Check out the whole of the Town Hall and Symphony Hall’s festive programme on their website.
