What better way to top off a hugely theatrical day catching two shows in London than indulging in some scrumptious Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea? When heading down to catch Les Mis and Kinky Boots for a two-show day, my best friend and I ventured into the One Aldwych Hotel.

Beautifully located in the heart of Covent Garden, and just across the road from the Lion King, the One Aldwych Hotel is a classy and luxurious hotel. Inspired by the magical Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (not to mention the extravagant stage show that had a residency in the West End just a couple of years ago,) it’s a truly delicious experience.

Once sitting down in the sleek and modern restaurant, with lots of natural light and a view of the Lyceum Theatre, we were handed some wonderfully illustrated menus. Each themed to a different child in the classic novel, it was a really lovely touch.

On the menu, the selection was suitably sweet. Starting with a variety of finger sandwiches from Smoked Salmon and chive crème fraiche to coronation chicken on onion bread, the classic yet flavoursome sandwiches were a real delight. However, from the savoury options, it was the warm Montgomery cheese scone and bacon jam that was seriously sensational. Melting in your mouth, the scone was soft and buttery and having never tasted nor heard of bacon jam, it’s now at the top of my shopping list.

Portioned well, we still had room for the real showstopper of the Afternoon Tea – the desserts. The flavours were out of this world, and the sheer amount of imagination that went into this menu is truly mind-blowing. From the golden chocolate egg filled with vanilla cheesecake and mango, to bubble-gum pannacotta, blueberry and white chocolate cake pops and homemade candy floss, the sweet flavours were sublime. I couldn’t possibly choose a favourite after delving into all the rich tastes.

Tea is my thing, and the One Aldwych didn’t disappoint with the innovative selection. Forget the bog standard English Breakfast, we tucked into both the intensely refreshing Moroccan Mint and the Rose Garden blend that was bursting with natural flavours. You’d think it would be an overload on your taste buds, but it left us feelin superbly satisfied.

Unlike many restaurants, I was surprised they barely bat an eyelid when mentioning my nut allergy. They simply catered the menu to my needs and it didn’t feel lacking in the slightest. They even tailored the banana and walnut cake to create a nut-free banana cake just for us.

Accompanied by a succulent glass of Lallier Grande Réserve Champagne, it was an impressive Afternoon Tea that was the perfect way to relax and recharge ahead of our busy day in London’s theatre land. With sweet treats galore that were designed with detail to both look outstanding and taste astonishing, it was an extraordinary experience.
