Iconic romantic comedy Crazy For You is high-kicking across the country in a UK tour of the Watermill Theatre’s glorious production.
With book by Ken Ludwig and lyrics by Ira Gershwin, it has all the elements of an old-school musical in this feel-good production. Set in New York, frustrated Broadway dancer Bobby, son of a wealthy banking family is sent over to Deadrock, Nevada to close down a failing theatre. Upon arrival, Bobby instantly falls for the daughter of the theatre’s owner, Polly. With a rollercoaster of emotions, disguises and mistaken identity, we are taken through of this troubled romance.
Strictly star Tom Chambers plays the foolish Bobby whose dreams to become a dancer are dampened by his mother who manipulates him into working for her. Engaged to Irene (Clare Sweeney) for five years and not wanting to marry her, he is stuck in a rut. Chambers has charm and he performs the role with superb comedy timing. With lots of personality interjected into his movement, Chambers has a natural stage presence. Clare Sweeney as his fiance Irene has limited stage time but brings lots of sass to her role and she relishes in her musical number Naughty Baby.
Charlotte Wakefield steals the show with her sensational performance as Polly. She depicts the feisty young woman with expressive flair and gives the role some real oomph. Her expressive characterisation is excellent but it is her exceptional vocals that bring such power to the show. With a gorgeous vocal tone, strong belt and such clarity in her voice, you really wish her solo numbers would never end.
Bursting with fantastic musical numbers like ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’, ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’, the music of the show is joyous and catchy. The ensemble brings tremendous energy and the way they play musical instruments on stage is both impressive and brings a new dimension to the classic musical.
Nathan M. Wright’s choreography thrusts the performance into the 21st century, and this paired with Wakefield’s vocals creates real stand-out moments. Although the storyline doesn’t pack a huge punch, the talent and energy gives the production a real lift.
Crazy For You is an uplifting and heart-warming production that feels as cosy as a warm cup of tea.
