“Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
Considering yesterday was International Women’s Day I wanted today’s inspiration to be about the book #Girlboss written by Sophia Amoruso the CEO of Nasty Gal.
If you don’t know what Nasty Gal is, it is a highly successful vintage clothing website. Sophia started her business by selling vintage clothes on ebay and used her initiative and intelligence to expand Nasty Gal into a $100 million dollar plus business. She wrote this book about her life, and how she grew up, worked extremely hard and achieved such tremendous success.
What I loved the most about this book is that it is overflowing with women empowerment and none of it is sugarcoated. The basic message of this book is that if you work hard and don’t take no for an answer then you’re destined for success. My favourite quote in the book is “fortune favors action” emphasising the importance of hard work, not sitting on your backside and expecting everything to just happen for you.
“No matter where you are in life, you’ll save a lot of time by not worrying too much about what other people think about you. The earlier in your life that you can learn that, the easier the rest of it will be.”
She explains that a huge part of success is risk taking and that facing rejection is inevitable but you have to put yourself out there or you’ll get nowhere. She illiterates that “there are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.” and that we all need to make mistakes in order to learn from them.
Sophia defines a Girlboss as “someone who is in charge of their own life”. Ambition is a huge factor in what drives someone to succeed and as Sophia tells the story of her life, her focus and ambition is evident on every single page. I was really impressed by the amount of determination Sophia had, and if she had a vision she didn’t stop until she made it happen.
Who doesn’t love an insightful book that makes you want to get out into the world and make your mark. When reading this book it made me really look at my life and think about what I want to achieve. It filled me with motivation and inspired me to work hard, think creatively and make big things happen for myself.
